You can always resit the exam (but you can't resit the party!)

School students always seem convinced that law is one of the most difficult subjects there is. From my perspective honours Leaving Cert maths, or biology, or any science really, or even languages are far more difficult. I seriously have no idea how anyone studies engineering. All I see is a strange mix of incomprehensible numbers and letters on a page!

Because it’s essay based, I think law is one of those subjects that it’s difficult to get an A in, but also difficult to fail. Most of the time there is no right or wrong answer (unlike maths), so grading is all about how you come to your answer, and the reasoning you use. Only a few people in my class have failed subjects, and no one I know has had to repeat a year.

Some law subjects have essays during the semester, but grades for most subjects are 100% based on your exams. These are held twice a year. Christmas exams happen in December (before Christmas!) and summer ones in May. They’re normally two hours, and a mix of essay and problem questions. If you do fail, you can do an essay to make up for it, or else resit the module the following semester or year.

Our exams are held in the RDS. With so many students in the one hall, it can definitely be a bit daunting at first!

Lots of people will tell you that the Leaving Cert is far more difficult than anything you’ll do in college. I’m not sure if that’s true, but university is difficult in different ways. Because you have so much freedom, it’s all about getting the correct work-life balance, which can be hard at first. Though studying is important, I'm sure all of the student ambassadors would emphasise life outside study in college. Don’t ignore all your work, but don’t forget to have fun either!
